has met several times over the summer and is now a certified block watch!  During several Block Watch meetings, Officer Steve Billups, 6th Precinct Community Liaison Officer, went over community and personal safety issues; outlined tips on how to make our community safer and he provided support/information to KLBNA residents. On August 11, 2004, several Block Watch members met with Officer Billups at the Police Radio Room at 1250 Fairwood Avenue and completed the certification process for the Block Watch.

Now the hard work can begin and we need you to PLEASE attend the KLBNA Block Watch.

The KLBNA Block Watch will meet EVERY first Thursday at 7:00 PM at 823 East Long Street starting September 2, 2004.

It is very important that you and your neighbors attend and communicate with the group issues that exist in our community so that we can be aware and start to address concerns.

Communication is the key. Officer Billups has committed to attend and has agreed to share his knowledge and expertise with the Block Watch. So all we need is YOU.

Please plan to attend. In the meantime, continue to call the police with Emergency Calls Dial “9-1-1″ and all other Non-Emergency Calls Dial 645-4545.

I leave you with several tips from one of Officer Billup’s trainings on safety:

Lighting is important. Since most burglars do not like to be observed while they are working, they often shun well lighted areas. A few exterior lights can provide extra security and peace of mind. Also, keep shrubbery, trees, and other foliage away from windows and doors. They provide excellent coverage for a burglar to work without risk of detection.

Remember crime effects us all.
